Coordinated efforts in Europe and North Africa to fight against Debt and Austerity (ENG, ESP) #HolaDeudocracia

The International Citizen Debt Audit Network – ICAN, has been born under the slogan “We don’t owe! We won’t pay!”, bringing together movements and networks in different European and North African countries, fighting austerity measures through the implementation of Citizen Debt Audits.

Barcelona, April 13th – The First Euro-Mediterranean Meeting of the newly formed International Network for Citizen Debt Audits, has been held this weekend in Brussels. Activists from twelve countries participated: Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Poland, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium, Egypt and Tunisia. The different regions are developing or initiating Citizen Debt Audits or campaigns against austerity and debt.

During the meeting different organizations, networks and social movements shared experiences, talking about the type of audits being conducted or promoted in each country, as well as what type of actions and social mobilizations strategies are developing in each territory (see appendix for a list of the different campaigns). Among them, the Spanish Citizen Debt Audit Platform, “We don’t owe, we won’t pay!”, was presented, which brings together organizations and social movements in the Spanish State and will conduct a citizen debt audit in the country.

Beyond the exchange of information on how each country is tackling the debt situation, the meeting set the foundations for a better communication and coordination of the international network. It also outlined a common calendar, which identifies important action dates against debt and austerity: May 1st Labor Day, Global May protests from May 12th to 15th (coinciding with the first anniversary of “15M/Indignados” movement in Spain) and May 16th to 19th protests, actions, rallies and blockades against the European Central Bank in Frankfurt.

The proposal made by Greece of holding a Global Day of Action against Debt, Austerity and in solidarity with the Greek people, was warmly welcomed, probably during the Global Week of Action against Debt and IFIs, held annually between October 8th and 15th. This year coincides with the 25th anniversary of the death of Thomas Sankara, President of Burkina Faso, killed (among other issues) for opposing to payment of debt. It has been also agreed to study the possibility of a second international meeting, with greater participation of grassroots activists, and growing presence of organisations and more countries, probably in Barcelona early autumn 2012.

Civil war erupted in Syria

I have not been able to do anything I need to! Here is why:

I have been following the streams of eruption tonight regarding Syria. After the conference call, Syria has basically erupted into a civil war. The Free Syrian Army has declared non-stop until Assad is removed. This was after five hours of attacks on several cities by the military wiping out whole neighborhoods of innocent people. More become ill when the water supply was damaged. Ambulances were attacked on the way to hospitals by snipers on the rooftops.

After this, Action from around the world. Syrian embassies everywhere were the base for rallies. Many of these have become very violent and still things are escalating. I write this note to let everyone know what is happening right now!

Tonight, I watch a man set up livestream for the rally in Cairo. They shot upon and he was chased. I watched and tweeted to teh world (as did others) more eyes. plesase. THis man is begging, “Please I dont know what to do”. Within hours, he marches back to the embassy with a few hundred. This is where stopped to let you all know that I am not flowing through on things, feel free to tweet me at @indigojourney as that is where I most alive tonight.

Crónicas de Siria: El alma de la revolución siria

Sexto y último capítulo de “Crónicas de Siria”, realizadas clandestinamente durante estas Navidades en la sitiada ciudad de Homs, Siria.

Pronto se comprende por qué la joven Nur genera una aureola de respeto a su alrededor. Ella está detrás de las manifestaciones, de sus consignas y pancartas, de la distribución de vídeos y de la organización social en Homs que impide que la ciudad, millón y medio de habitantes cercados y atacados desde hace meses por su Ejército, se derrumbe ante la falta de suministros.

La mujer más respetada por la población de Homs pasa completamente desapercibida. De pequeña estatura, su timidez queda evidenciada por una voz que emerge en forma de susurros y confirmada por una sonrisa ruborizada cada vez que alguien se refiere al papel que está jugando en esta revolución. “Es nuestra heroína”, dicen unos y otros, y ella desvía la mirada al suelo con evidente sonrojo. Pero ganarse la admiración, incondicional y general, de los hombres árabes siendo mujer es una suerte reservada para pocas valientes, y sin duda Nur al Homsi lo es.

Los tres teléfonos móviles que le acompañan suenan sin parar con informaciones de la situación en la ciudad, peticiones de ayuda o solicitud de consejo para organizar desde entregas de comida hasta envíos de suministros médicos. “Ella es el alma de esta revolución, si es arrestada será el final para la ciudad de Homs”, confía uno de sus compañeros.

A medida que Nur encuentra confianza suficiente para explicar su historia, se comprende por qué genera esa aureola de respeto a su alrededor. Unas cien personas se han reunido en la noche del martes en la plaza Catalunya para mostrar su rechazo a las violaciones a los derechos humanos que el SCAF (Junta Militar egipcia) está cometiendo contra su pueblo y que se ha visto incrementada el pasado fin de semana.

One hundred people have gathered on Tuesday night in Plaza Catalunya to show their rejection of human rights violations that SCAF (Egyptian Militar) is committed against his people and has increased the past weekend .

Entre los asistentes se encontraban varios egipcios que mostraban banderas en solidaridad con las 17 personas que hasta el momento se han dado como muertas en los enfrentamientos en la plaza Tahrir de El Cairo. Algunas asesinadas después de torturas, violaciones o golpeadas hasta la extenuación.

Among the participants there were several Egyptian people showing their flas in solidarity with the 17 people have been killed in clashes in Tahrir Square in Cairo. Some killed after torture, rape or beaten until exhaustion.

Durante una hora se fueron proyectando videos de la represión vivida en Tahrir mientras más curiosos fueron acercándose y uniéndose al debate que iba originando la injusticia que transmitían las imágenes. Debajo de la improvisada pantalla se diseñó un símbolo de la paz con velas. En algún momento se oyeron gritos de “asesinos, asesinos” impulsados por la violencia indiscriminada de los militares.

For an hour were projecting videos of repression lived in Tahrir while curious people were coming and joining the debate that was causing the injustice transmitted trough images. At some point there were shouts of “murderers,” led by the indiscriminate violence of the military.

Una activista española recién llegada de Egipto narró su experiencia a un nutrido círculo de oyentes. Contó las dificultades por las que pasa el pueblo egipcio desde la caída de Mubarak y el interés por lo que sucede allende las fronteras de aquel país. Llamó a solidarizarse con un pueblo amable y luchador desproporcionadamente castigado en estos últimos días.

One Spanish activist recently arrived from Egypt narrated his experience to a large circle of listeners. He told about the difficulties for the Egyptian people since the fall of Mubarak and what happens beyond the borders of that country. She called for solidarity for this people disproportionately punished in recent days.

Al final del acto se volvió a leer el manifiesto y la gente se quedó un rato más debatiendo en la plaza.

Recientemente voceros del derechista gobierno israelita de Benjamín Netanyahu, líder del partido Likud, pusieron sobre el cada vez más agrietado tapete de las relaciones internacionales, la posibilidad de una próxima guerra en el polvorín medioriental.

El mismo Netanyahu, tan aplaudido en su última intervención ante el Congreso de los Estados Unidos, luego de señalar la pretendida esencia de la política israelita a favor de la paz con sus vecinos árabes, en su opinión siempre rechazada por líderes que en realidad no deseaban esta paz, hoy amenaza de abierta manera con bombardeo a sus instalaciones nucleares al que consideran el principal enemigo del Estado de Israel: la República Islámica de Irán.
