Mientras, los ocupas coreaban y danzaban “We’re not gonna take it”, de Twisted Sister.

Report from Porto Alegre (Report 4)

Report 4

Hi All,

So, there is not much to add since the last update, but will provide a few links/summaries here.

Firstly, as for March/May and days of action. I did bring this up here, but it has been very far from any agenda. The World Social Forum is building towards Rio+20 which will be taking place in the second half of June. They have also made a call out for a global day of action on June 5th (see declaration of social movements copied in below). This is all something we may want to discuss when back, including what presence, if any, we may want to have in the Rio+20/World Social Forum process over coming months. Apart from this, they are also preparing for a World Social Forum next year in Tunisia, as well as a separate gathering in Tunisia this summer, which may be of more interest to us as occupiers – again can talk in more detail about this when back.

Update from international meetings in Frankfurt 21st-22nd of January

The conference we were invited to took place on Sunday but since I was there on Saturday already,
I attended another Germany-wide meeting of radical left organisations planning anti-capitalist
actions. And because Sunday was very focused on May and had a wide range of participants, not
only Occupy, I spent Monday afternoon in the Frankfurt camp before leaving back to London.

I’m gonna write this in inverse chronological order because I think that’s very much the relevancy
order of things to you.

Occupy Frankfurt is right in the face of ECB and they even have a banner hanging in the big euro-sign
in front of the bank… amazing. It’s about 50 people and they’re quite well organised, didn’t seem like
they’re actually doing very much in addition to running the camp. But apparently it is the biggest in
Germany (which makes sense even if it sounds surprising, it’s a German thing, activists in Berlin are
traditionally quite focused on local and community issues).

[bcn] Catalan police as protesters inside demo in Barcelona/Los mossos ya protestan desde las manifestaciones de Barcelona

[ENG/ESP]

On Saturday afternoon over a hundred thousand people participated in the rally against the cuts the Catalan government. The demonstration was called by trade unions, the Catalan Social Forum, 15M movement and other groups.

The curious fact of the demonstration was to see if appears dozens of mossos march in the demonstration with family and friends as happened last 18J (photos and video). Some wearing the cap service and others with signs announcing their presence at the demonstration.

This confirms the Catalan police openly participated in activities against the present system of government. It is a fact that the demonstrations in Barcelona can see cops protesting with posters, banners, flags, etc. and at the same time, riot police guarding public buildings. A double moral difficult to understand from the perspective of the social demands.

The participation of the Catalan police union has also recently declared that efforts to resolve the crisis may be more forceful, the police remain unresolved as education and health sectors have seen their benefits cut provocating seriously damage.
