The Portrait of Protesters: Young, Libertarian and Furious at the Prime Minister
An online survey participated by 3000 protesters reveals that the actual motive behind protests is the Prime Minister’s authoritarian attitudes.
The online survey prepared by Esra Ercan Bilgiç and Zehra Kafkaslı, academicians at Istanbul Bilgi University, reveals the profile of protesters and their demands. According to the preliminary results of the survey answered by 3000 protesters in 20 hours, protesters are not members or supporters of any political party as it was claimed by the Prime Minister Mr. Erdoğan.
39.6% of the participants are aged between 19 and 25 and 24% of them are between 26 and 30. 75.8% of the participants were actively involved in the street protests. 53.7% of them said they had never attended any mass protests before. While 70% of the protesters do not sympathize with any political parties, only 15.3% of them sympathize with a political party.
The participants were also asked which motives were effective in their taking part in the protests. They were asked to choose among the options ‘I definitely agree’, ‘I agree’, ‘I am uncertain’ and ‘I do not agree’. The ones who definitely agree that the Prime Minister’s authoritarianism were effective were in the first place with 92.4%. 91.3% of them definitely agree that disproportionate force by the police was effective. 91.1% said that violation of democratic rights led them to participate in the protests. While the silence of the media affected 84.2%, the ones who said that the cutting down of trees motivated them were 56.2%.
The majority of participants described themselves as ‘libertarian’ and they were followed by the ones who called themselves as ‘secular’.
The survey also reveals the demands of the protesters. While the 96.1% of them want respect for freedom, only 37% of them want a new political party to be established.
According to the survey, a very low rate of the participants desire a military coup. 79.5% of the participants are against a military coup.

El retrato de los manifestantes: joven, libertario y furiosos con el Primer Ministro
Una encuesta en línea a 3.000 manifestantes revela que el motivo real detrás de las protestas son las actitudes autoritarias del primer ministro.
La encuesta en línea elaborada por Esra Ercan Bilgic y Zehra Kafkaslı, académicos de la Universidad Bilgi de Estambul, revela el perfil de los manifestantes y sus demandas. De acuerdo con los resultados preliminares de la encuesta respondida por 3.000 manifestantes en 20 horas, los manifestantes no son miembros o simpatizantes de un partido político como fue reclamado por el primer ministro Erdogan.
El 39,6% de los participantes tienen entre 19 y 25 años y el 24% de ellos tienen entre 26 y 30 años. 75,8% de los participantes se involucraron activamente en las protestas callejeras. 53,7% de ellos dijo que nunca había asistido a ninguna protestas masivas antes. Mientras que el 70% de los manifestantes no simpatizan con ningún partido político, sólo el 15,3% de ellos simpatizan con un partido político.
También se pidió a los participantes cuales eran los motivos de su participación en las protestas. Se les pidió elegir entre las opciones: Estoy totalmente de acuerdo, Estoy de acuerdo, No estoy seguro y No estoy de acuerdo.
Los que estaban totalmente de acuerdo de que el autoritarismo del primer ministro fue cierto estaban en el primer lugar con 92,4%. 91,3% de ellos estaban totalmente de acuerdo en que fue cierta la fuerza desproporcionada por parte de la policía. 91.1% dijo que la violación de los derechos democráticos les llevó a participar en las protestas. Mientras que el 84,2% rechazó el silencio de los medios, los que dijeron que la tala de árboles fue lo que los motivó eran 56,2%.
La mayoría de los participantes se describieron como ‘libertarios’ y fueron seguidos por los que se llamaban a sí mismos como “seculares”.
La encuesta también revela las demandas de los manifestantes. Mientras que el 96,1% de ellos quieren respeto a la libertad, sólo el 37% de ellos quiere que se establezca un nuevo partido político.
Según la encuesta, un índice muy bajo de los participantes desean un golpe militar. 79,5% de los participantes están en contra de un golpe militar.
